I’ve been to Hana Cafe a few different times, and can still remember when it was “the” place to go in Wichita for sushi. Now there’s a lot more competition, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I know I’ve said a few times after eating a dish that I’ll know the next day or next week how good it was based on my cravings for it. For example, that Love Roll at Wasabi. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say I’ve fantasized about that roll six out of seven days of the week since I had it. Same for DeFazio’s Italian salad. Gambino’s Italian chicken with tomato and jalapeno pizza (and their salad bar). Po Boy’s pizza rolls. Pho from To Chau or My Tho. The list can go on and on and on. I feel like all I do is daydream about food everyday. I’m pretty sure this isn’t “normal.” But in the words of a psychology professor I have, “Define normal to me because I don’t know what you mean.” Point, psychology professor!

The last time I went to Hana I think was about a year and a half ago. I know, I’m a bad patron. But at least a few times a month I think about bi bim bab. It’s a rice dish with veggies, your choice of meat, and a scrambled egg. It sounds strange to daydream about. But add a little soy sauce, the bi bim bab sauce, and give it a little stir. You have a recipe for disaster. Er, I mean for victory. Y-U-M. As for sushi, I’ve had a few pieces of friends’ sushi, but don’t know that I’ve ever ordered it on my own, and am not sure how varied their selection is. I’m sure the selection is good. And know the sushi is delicious. But I can’t speak to it personally. So I won’t.

This ISN’T bi bim bab. I know, I’m such a tease. Sorry. (That’s what she said.)

Let me preface this by saying, this review is a few weeks old. When I heard a place that served something called “pizza tacos” was coming to town, I was enthralled. No, I was ecstatic! I needed to know what a pizza taco was, and whether they were served into the wee hours of the morning. Well, fellow over-eaters who are barreling into this new year, I’m here to tell you a pizza taco is pizza dough with pizza toppings and lettuce, folded in half like a taco. I feel like this would be the perfect food to eat walking home from a bar. I wish Wichita were compact enough to walk from a bar to Charlie’s Pizza Taco and then home. Alas, I’m not in that good of shape, and a 15 mile hike in heels? Yowsa. I would know. I walked a measly 2 or 3 miles from old town to Maple and Meridian once. I’m not too proud to admit I thought the clock at Douglas and Seneca was the Friends clock. But that’s a story for another day (and another blog).

Me: Are you a pizza? Are you a taco? I don’t understand.
Pizza Taco: Does it matter? Why does everyone have to define me, understand me? I’m a hipster food. You clearly don’t get it.
Me: Can we agree to disagree?
Pizza Taco: I’m void of emotions. So whatever. I don’t care.
Me: Legit.
Pizza Taco: But we can agree I’m unique and interesting, right?
Me: We can agree you’re needy and use your uniqueness as a way to pretend you shun social norms and rebel. But all it proves you need our approval and love.
Pizza Taco: Fair enough.

I know I’ve been MIA. I think I’ve already said that I moved to the west side of town and have hit up a few restaurants, but nothing’s really caught my fancy enough to think about it after I left. And I decided in this economy, if I can’t say anything nice, I’m not saying anything at all. If I had frequented a place and the service/food was consistently not great, then I’d feel compelled to say something negative. But considering I’m eating out very little these days, if it wasn’t great the first time, it probably won’t get a vote to return.

That said, I’m here with some YUMMY news! And that news is Wasabi! If you haven’t been, go. No, seriously. Go! OK, you’re busy and you really just want to read this post. After all, you’re already here. May as well finish out the details. I can relate. I’m a data gatherer, too.

Dear Love Roll- I love you. Love-Kelly

Based on the recommendation of Cammy on my New Places to Review post, Charley and I hit up Korean Hot Stone Grill last week. And it was good! I’ve driven by the place a hundred times on my way to Sonic Happy Hour, but never thought much about what kinds of food they serve. That part of Wichita has tons of restaurants, but honestly? None of them are fantastic. Well, now I’m going to want to eat Korean food everyday for lunch!

Bento box = lotsa lovin’ for a lunch price

It didn’t take Crystal, Kristy and I too long to mark one of the newly listed places to review off the list! I have seen Avivo in New Market Square on one of the few dreaded occasions I go to that God forsaken corner of Wichita. Is it just me, or is that the absolute most congested part of town? I don’t know whose idea it was to shove a mess of stores and restaurants on one corner, but mission accomplished. Now I avoid it like the plague. Well, except for last Friday, apparently. Hey, a girl has a right to change her mind. Even mid-paragraph.

P is for pizza, that’s good enough for me.

I FINALLY made it to Kanai! I’ve wanted to go there for such a long time but the popular stories about wait times, and no lunch menu made it hard to commit, especially when I lived on the east side. As soon as I moved west, Kanai shot to the top of my “places I need to go immediately” list. And I’m glad I went!

OK, first of all, I’d like to apologize for my extended absence. I’ve been moving. YES, MOVING! In this housing market I actually sold and bought a house. Well, buying wasn’t the problem. Selling is the trick. But it’s done. Let’s not talk about it. Let’s celebrate!

As you can probably tell from my Pho Hot, Pho Hien Noodle Soup Co and To Chau posts, I’m a pho pho-natic. I’ve never had pho I don’t like. And I heard the bread at My Tho makes the experience that much more pho-ing fantastic! OK, enough pho puns. I’m done. Onto the review!
